First Aid

Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the kiss of life that is; is often employed in first aid. When talking about first aid, probably the name of Friedrich von Esmarch comes to mind. Afterall, the German surgeon was credited as the founder of modern first aid; modern, probably because first aid most certainly has existed even in ancient time. Artificial respiration for instant, has been described in China during the Tang dynasty by the physician Sun Simiao. Another ancient Chinese physician however was credited as the originator of First Aid in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Ge Hong 葛洪 A.D. 283–343 lived during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Besides being a physician, he was a linguist, philosopher, politician, and writer. He wrote the first Chinese clinical medicine handbook, Handbook of Prescriptions for First Aid 肘后备急方 Zhouhou Bei Jifang besides other books on non-medical subjects.
