King of Medicine


In schools, I only read of David Livingstone and Albert Schweitzer, both Western doctors of great prestige. David Livingstone, a British hero of the late 19th-century was a Scottish physician and a Christian missionary. Albert Schweitzer was a German, a Lutheran and a medical missionary in Africa. Only recently through the social media, I learned of Sun Simiao 孙思邈, a Chinese physician who lived during the Sui and Tang dynasty till the ripe old age of 141 years. Sun Simiao's two books had had thousands of recipes for medicines; and he claimed that actions like touching hair, rolling eyes, walking, and shaking heads improved health. For his contributions to Chinese medicine and care for his patients, the physician earned his moniker, China's King of Medicine 药王.
