A Quiet Chinese New Year

There was a bull dance somewhere last year to usher in the year of the bull. Unlike the lion dance, the bull dance is not a norm during Chinese New Year. Neither is a tiger dance; haven't seen one yet and don't expect one. Prior to the pandemic, it was normal to hear the sound of cymbals and the beating of drums in the neighbourhood as families invited lion dance troupes to perform in their houses during the auspicious occasion. Pretty quiet this year which is to be expected. According to a lion dance troupe based in Kepong, there is a lower demand for lion dance performances in residential areas because of the pandemic. Lion dance troupes in the nation are privately run and get angpows for performing. This way, they have funds to pay for utility bills, rental of premises and other expenses. That they survive and keep the culture alive is indeed admirable.
