Don't Know Much about Chopsticks

Chopsticks have become a hot topic. While there are  chopsticks at home, they are not used that often. It is a norm now for both adults and children to use forks and spoons during meals since they are easily available and convenient. Don't really know much about chopsticks until the two time ex-prime minister of Malaysia chided the local Chinese for clinging to their ancestral roots, eating with chopsticks instead of hands for example; which he said only serves to divide the people. Then, some enlightening information started to spill out from the social media:
  • Chopsticks are 7.6 inch long to represent the seven emotions and the six sensory pleasures. The seven emotions are happiness, anger, grief, joy, sorrow, fear and worry while the six sensory pleasures are the pleasure of sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and thought.
  • Chopsticks come in pairs, representing Ying and Yang which the Chinese believe are the balancing forces in the universe.
  • The five fingers that hold the chopsticks represents Gold, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth which are the five elements in nature.
  • Chopsticks have a round end and a square end to represent Heaven and  Earth. The five fingers in between both ends represent Man.
  • Using a pair of chopsticks to get hold of food do not require excessive strength. Too little strength wouldn't do too. The secret is moderation, a value to be learned and applied to our speech and action so that one would be well mannered and be courteous.

Now that you've learned something about chopsticks, just have a look at how they are made...
