A Chinese dinner especially during a wedding always involves an eight course dinner. All the eight dishes would be placed in the center of the table to be shared among at least eight to ten people. Once while attending such a dinner, someone reminded not to wash our personal chopsticks using the soup; that's when someone tried to fish for a piece of meat or something with his chopsticks far too long; giving the odd look that he was in the midst of rinsing his chopsticks. There's supposed to be a serving chopsticks for everyone to take the food from the serving dish to be placed on your own personal dish where you can eat from using your personal chopsticks; I think I've read that from somewhere; but normally, I'd see a common serving ladle and really, there is such thing as chopstick etiquette; the what and what not to do with your chopsticks when eating just like there is Western dining etiquette.
Below is a short clip in Mandarin. You don't have to be proficient in the language to understand the do and don'ts when using chopsticks. Just take a look!
