The late Teresa Teng was once very popular in Japan. Before her however, there was another songbird who was very popular there, Judy Ong 翁倩玉, a Taiwanese who became a naturalized Japanese citizen. Remember first seeing her in a 1973 Taiwanese movie, Life Begins Here where she played a school teacher with a terminal disease. The movie has many beautiful songs and a warm story. It I'm sure was influenced by Hollywood's Sound of Music too and sometimes, I thought of it as the Chinese Sound of Music. Lol.
