Garden for Thought


On a hot afternoon, at the popular Raintree Walk in Taiping Lake Gardens, some ladies   approached me. They were all wearing summer hats and were obviously good friends on holiday. The ladies had asked if I could kindly take a snapshot of the four of them together to which I obliged. The ladies were from Kuala Lumpur and most probably they would not know that the stretch of road there wasn't a car-free zone until 2017 when the local authorities decided to close the road to vehicles to preserve the century-old rain trees there. Back in 1884, the Lake Gardens became Malaysia’s first official public park after a tin and rubber tycoon Chung Keng Quee donated the land to the town. Chung Keng Quee the founder and administrator of modern Taiping was said to be a big-hearted philanthropist and had in his lifetime made a lot of big donations that benefitted schools, temples and hospitals. The ladies and many others would not know that either.
