Mahjong 麻将, the Chinese tile-based game is so commonly played in the Chinese community all over the world by both the old and not so old that for a moment, one tends to mistake it for an ancient game. Then of course, it is relatively modern, having been developed in the mid-to-late 1800s in Southern China, around the Yangtze River Delta. The game caught on not just in China but became a global fad the 1920s. By the mid-20th century, it even became a hallmark of Jewish American culture.
