An Artist's Gift

When the local police seized over four million Ringgit worth of fireworks in Kepong the other day, I was wondering what the famed award winning Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang 蔡国强 would do with them. The Fujian-born Internationally acclaimed artist who draws inspirations from traditional Chinese culture is reknown for using gunpowder as a medium for his art. Cai Guo-Qiang does not just create ethereal drawings by igniting different types of gunpowder on paper or silk; the sky could be his canvas. The world most certainly would not forget his 2015 pyrotechnic art piece that lit up the sky above his hometown Quanzhou in south-eastern China. The 1,650 ft Sky Ladder connecting the earth and sky was a gift to his 100-year-old grandmother.
