Chinese Batik

Batik, painting using wax; is rather common in Malaysia that sometimes I thought it has its origin here. Neighbouring Indonesia has however always been promoting batik as a national identity and it's no wonder; the art is said to have originated there in Java. The word batik in fact comes from the Indonesian word ambatik which means a dotted piece of cloth. The tradition of making batik nevertheless is practised elsewhere in places as diverse as India, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and even China; something which probably shouldn't be a surprise. Batik in fact was one of the Silk Road commodities and was said to have existed in China as early the late Qin (BC 221-207) or early Han (BC 206 – CD 220) Dynasty. Today however, only two communities, the Zhuang and the Miao ethnic groups still practise the art of batik making.
