Watching Shanghai Bund 新上海滩 , a 2007 Chinese television series directed by Gao Xixi is akin to walking down memory lane. The Chinese TV series is a remake of the 1980 Hong Kong TVB period drama television series, The Bund which in 1980 made Chow Yun-fat extremely popular. The original also has an extremely popular theme song Seung Hoi Tan 上海灘, a Cantonese number composed by Joseph Koo and performed by Frances Yip. In the remake, the opening theme song is again Seung Hoi Tan 上海灘 but maybe, it's only right to call it Shànghǎi Tān. The song is still sung by Frances Yip but this time, in Mandarin. While the Chinese characters are the same, they are read differently in Mandarin, Cantonese or other Chinese dialects.
