Notoriously Famous

Call him famous perhaps for his songs like Thai Love Song 泰國情哥, Stranger In The North 漂向北方) and Tokyo Bon 2020 東京盆踊 2020 have gained global attention and his latest movie Babi has been applauded at several international film festivals; but to some, he is just notorious. Wee Meng Chee, a Malaysian Chinese hip hop recording artist, composer, filmmaker and actor, better known as Namewee courted trouble the moment he burst into the entertainment scene with his song Negarakuku. A remake of the national anthem of Malaysia, the song drew uncalled attention from the authorities as it contains a word that could be interpreted as obscene. In 2016, the talented guy courted more trouble with his music video  where he and some other performers from Taiwan clowned around in various religious premises as they belted out the catchy Oh My God!. It was alleged that he insulted the dignity of Islam. While his latest acclaimed movie Babi was banned in his home country; based on some video clips, the local artists’ association, Seniman had lodged a report against it citing that it contains elements of racism that tarnished the country's image. Call him racist if you want; but here's a feel good song for you from Namewee: Good morning!
