Good Luck Food

Chinese New Year may be over; but most certainly not Chinese New Year goodies. There is still a lot of Nian gao left. Nian gao translated simply as year cake is made of glutinous rice flour and is a must have item for Chinese New Year. Sweet and sticky, it is supposed to seal the mouth of the Kitchen God so that he cannot say bad things about the family to the Jade Emperor. Some consider eating nian gao as good luck too as the name nian gao is homonym for high year; a good year, that is. Mmm...mm...I think I better have a second helping of this, deep fried nian gao!
