Go!

Probably have seen this game being played umpteenth time in Chinese Wuxia movies or some other Chinese movies with an ancient setting; but didn't give it much thought until recently when watching  qi hun 棋魂,  the Chinese adaptation of Japanese manga, Hikaru no Go. Hikaru no Go, written by Yumi Hotta is about a boy who learns to play the game Go from an ancient spirit and begins to excel in it. Go is a board game for two. Having been invented more than 2,500 years ago in China, Go is believed to be the oldest board game still being played today. A legend has it that the mythical Chinese emperor Yao had his counselor Shun design the game to help discipline his unruly son, Danzhu. Chinese called the game wei qi 围棋 which  means encirclement board game; and the name suggests the aim of the game which is to surround more territory than the opponent. That the game was invented in China but Hikaru no Go was written in Japan is understandable. In 2016, a survey revealed that there were over 46 million people in the world who know how to play Go and the majority comes from East Asia. The game is popular not only in China but Japan and Korea as well.
