The pictures of a potty is making its round in the social media; a Chinese potty. A potty is a bowl used as a toilet by children; so, perhaps it is more accurate to say the pictures of a Chinese chamber pot is making its round. After all, a chamber pot has the same function as a potty; only that in this case, both children and adults could use it. I remember it being used at home since ours used to be an old fashioned big double storey wooden house and it was inconvenient to come down to the toilet at night. While the indoor toilets have displaced the chamber pots in the 19th century, they fail to displace them totally. In Korea and I presume everywhere else in the world; chamber pots are still being used where there is no indoor plumbing.This is to avoid the cold elements at night and in winter. Since it's also difficult for little children to manoeuvre the normal toilet, a potty is still a very common item in a modern house where there are little children. Just that, the potty for children is a dull piece of plastic while the traditional Chinese chamber is made of metal and gaily painted. No wonder the social media went crazy when in Canada, the Chinese chamber pot is sold online as a fruit basket or ice bucket for champagne! Nevermind that there can always be new and creative uses to old things!
