The 1970 American romantic drama film Love Story which starred Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal was a big hit, I remember; and it didn't have a happy ending. Love stories where the lovers parted seem like always a hit. It's the same with a 1961 Hong Kong black and white melodrama Love Without End 不了情 starring the late movie queen Lin Dai who played a songstress who gives her all to the man she loves played by Kwan Shan, only to be parted finally after she contracted cancer; just like Ali MacGraw's character. Love Without End had been remade twice; in 1970 and in 1983. The later versions have different storylines but the heroines all have terminal diseases. Both bear the same Chinese titles 新不了情 New Love Without End.
