Chinese characters have come a long way; from the Middle Shang period as ceramic inscriptions found at the site of Xiaoshuangqiao (小双桥) suggest. It has developed into an art form; Chinese calligraphy, a visual delight to many, including ancient emperors like Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty and Emperor Gaozong of Song Dynasty, both of whom are great calligraphers themselves. In modern times, Chinese calligraphy is still alive and kicking; I should say; just before the recent Chinese New Year, I got to witness a Chinese calligraphy competition.
