A Chinese Movie: Enter the Fat Dragon

Donnie Yen's Chinese New Year offering opening scene reminds me of the 1994 American action thriller film starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, Speed. In the American movie, there are actions in a speeding bus and in Enter the Fat Dragon, Donnie Yen's has a big kung fu fight with some bank robbers in their escape vehicle. Enter the Fat Dragon is a remake of a 1978 Hong Kong movie starring Sammo Hung; the latter being a parody of one of  Bruce Lee's film. The new version pays tribute to Bruce Lee by featuring clips from his film and there is even a scene where Donnie Yen uses the nunchaku, a weapon popularized by Bruce Lee in the movie Enter the dragon. While in the 1978 movie, Sammo Hung, with his original built, was cut out for the role of the dragon, Donnie Yen in the beginning of the movie is slim and fit and it is only after breaking off with his girlfriend and being demoted that he starts to binge and become overweight. Of course, he has to don a latex suit and undergo three to four hours of makeup to kilo up and here lies one of the attractions to the latest version of Enter the Fat Dragon. Don't t expect the same storyline but expect a lot of actions, fun and excitement!
