The first time I've seen a food eating competition was in a Hollywood movie; not the blueberry pie eating contest in the 1986 film Stand by me definitely. Later, such scenes popped out in HK movies; but even though the island organized its own HK International Burger Eating Competition, I don't think that such event is part of Chinese culture; just that, the practice has caught on. In the recent Mid-Autumn festival, I witnessed for the first time a food eating competition. Of course, in this case participants tried to eat as many moon cakes as possible.
