During the good old days when my father was running his little sundry shop, I remember there would be dates in his shop during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Malays patronising my father's little sundry shop would pick up these dates. These fruits probably come from the Middle East, and definitely are different from the red dates; otherwise known as jujube that comes from China. Besides eating them as they are picked or in their preserved forms, as desserts and so on, the Chinese dates could be used as part of the ingredients of a Chinese herbal soup. Now, I wonder if those dates from other places are used in the same way....
