Can a city rely solely on solar energy? There is this planned city in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates called Masdar City which purportedly rely on solar energy that is being built by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Comany. The city is designed by a British architectural firm, Foster and Partners and aims for a zero carbon, zero waste and other environmentally friendly goals. While the project has been supported by World Wide Fund for Nature and the BioRegional, there are sceptics who fear that Masdar City will just be another luxury development for the wealthy. Nicolai Ouroussoff, an architecture critic for New York Times calls Masdar City the ultimate gated community. You would not be reminded of the dome city in Logan's Run, would you? Logan's Run, by the way is a novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson about a future society in which both population and the consumption of resources are maintained in equilibrium by requiring the death of everyone who reaches thirty years of age.
