CNY Flashback: Food for All

Food is not just prepared for the living but also for the Gods and the dead. After Chinese New Year's reunion dinner, the clock will tick away the old year and bring in the new year. Families will stay up until the wee hours and at the stroke of midnight, just as we expect Cinderella to leave the Ball, the old year will leave. Usually, mother will perform a special prayer to send off the Gods as they take time off to leave earth and give an annual report on the humans to the Jade emperor.Joss sticks, candles and paper money are burnt and food are offered and firecrackers lit. The dead are not forgotten on this day of joy too. In Taiwan, it is said that during the first day of Chinese New Year, red dates, winter melons and peanut candies and other confections are offered to the gods, Buddhas, and the ancestors. I suppose the food offerings will be decorated with red paper cuttings too but all said, rest assured that both man whether dead or alive and the Gods will not go hungry on Chinese New Year!
