Oracle bones were found in the ruins of the Shang capital near Anyang in the north of Henan province. They are actually ox scapulae or turtle shells on which the earliest recognisable examples of written Chinese were inscribed. Chinese characters originally were pictures of people, animals or other things but over the centuries they evolved and no longer resemble the things they represent.
