Wang Lee Hom

Four time Golden Melody Award-winning American singer-songwriter and actor , Wang Lee Hom, achieved highly recognized success in Taian, Mainland China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Thailand andthe rest of Southeast Asia. He introduced "chinked-out" music, a genre heavily influenced by traditional Chinese music. Although he did not begin learning Chinese until he was 18, Wang is now fluent in Chinese in both speaking and writing and has written many Chinese lyrics for his songs. He plays over 10 musical instruments and these include piano, drums, guitar, bass, violin, vibraphone, erhu and zun. While in Kuala Lumpur to promte his 12th album, Gai Bian Zhi Zi (Change Me), Wang Lee Hom had said that he wanted to spread the message of conserving the environment especially to youngsters through his latest album. A Chinese Song: The Shepherds Of Ke Ke Tuo Hai 可可托海的牧羊人

So, Ke Ke Tuo Hai 可可托海 or Koktokay is the name of a place in Xinjiang, China. Wang Qi's song 可可托海的牧羊人 The Shepherds Of Ke Ke Tuo Hai about a man pining for a woman is set in such a vast and beautiful backdrop . As the title of the song indicates, the man is a shepherd. The vocation of the woman however isn't really clearly stated but a source claims she is a beekeeper. The shepherd would move with his flocks to where the grasses are and the beekeeper would move with her bees to where the flowers are. In this way, they meet and separate at certain seasons of the year; and during the separation, the man yearns for the woman but is informed that she has married another man. The song is rather melancholy and would sometimes make the soft hearted and romantic cry . A Chinese Song: 送别 Farewell Song

The Chinese song, Songbie 送别 Farewell Song has an interesting history. The song was produced in 1927 but it had been around long before that. It was also associated with a Chinese Buddhist monk Hong Yi. When a student in Japan, Hong Yi was known by his birth name Li Shutong 李叔同 . There, he heard and was smitten by the Japanese song 旅愁 Loneliness on a Journey and then he arranged the Chinese lyrics to the melody of the song which Japanese musician Kyuukei Inudou had actually translated from the original English 1851 version Dreaming of Home and Mother by American composer John P.
