CNY Flashback: A Chinese New Year Dish

Even before Chinese New Year arrives, you'd see shops, supermarket and other commercial places dressing up to welcome the big day. Red is the colour of the day and it is not unusual to see places decorated with red lanterns and red paper cuttings. Many eating places would join in the rush to usher in the New Year or more specifically the customers! At Sushi King where Japanese food is the norm, you'd even get to order Yee Sang or Yusheng ( 鱼生). This dish which is associated with Chinese New Year is actually a Teochew-style raw fish salad which consists of strips of raw salmon mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments. Many versions are said to have existed in China but the contemporary version is created and popularised in Malaysia in the 1960s amongst the ethnic Chinese community.
Food from Sushi King. Which one is Yee Sang?

The photos are sooo inviting but I would never live in that places: everything is made from fish!

Looks can lie. I don't like the soup in the picture. It is supposed to be Japanese soup.
