The September 30 Padang Earthquake in Sumatera, Indonesia sent tremors to Taiping, Malaysia and other forms of aftershocks too. A friend told me she felt the earth shaking while watching television. A picture in the newspaper showing young children looting the Ira Mulia supermarket had other friends talking. One said there is a closely-knit Chinese community in Padang. Even as the world is sending aid to Indonesia; China, Taiwan and Singapore included, all the local authorities did there was just to help only the indigenous Indonesians. The Indonesian Chinese have to rely on themselves and support one another. Of course, this last piece of news has not been authenticated but judging from what happened to the Indonesia Chinese in Java during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, one'd believe it to be true...Massacre of Chinese during the Asian Financial Crisis...
